If what finally emerges from the cocoon of the Emerging Church is more like a Luna moth than a butterfly a beautiful, luminous spirituality but not Christianity then I can see myself something like the Peter Ustinov character in Logan’s Run wandering around in the ruins of my wonderful All Saints’ church. The ancient Greeks believed their plays would give a “purification” or a “purging” (catharsis) of strong emotions such as sorrow, fear, pity, or even laughter to those watching .
Do the violent video games we play today or the soap operas and crime dramas so many watch have the same effect in our society?
Our miiitary trains soldiers with violent video games to desensitize them to the violence, the killing of others.
Are the soap operas and crime dramas similar in effect?
Do these videos take away our humanity or enhance it?
St. Paul said, “Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. “ Philippians 4:8 (NRSV)

Should I ever become convinced through study or any other means on this earth that Jesus Christ is just another good man, a great philosopher who tells us we should put flowers in our hair and in gun barrels then I will no longer need to attend a church or any other house of worship. All of existence will have changed. The dead will stay dead, and life will not ever really be any better. People will stay people sometimes better and sometimes worse.

Our It, that is within us, may our thoughts and our actions make sacred.

My kingdom come my will be done on earth as it is within me.

Give me this day that which I need to sustain my spirit.

And may I forgive myself what I  have done against the other.

Turn me away from what I believe to be wrong

For the Kingdom of God is within me forever and ever. So be it.

If you’re a Christian is there such a thing as heresy or is that a relic of the past?

Does it matter what we believe about Christ Jesus?

Are there modern denominations or movements within denominations that are sre revivals of old Christian heresies?

This below is from our friends at the UMC,

“Heresy is the rejection of established beliefs of a religious body, or adherence to “other beliefs.” The word “heresy” comes from the Greek word hairesis or choice. The Greek word is a neutral term.

A number of Christian beliefs were declared heresy in the early centuries of the church. Some beliefs declared heresy (Monophysitism, Monothelitism, Nestorianism) are still maintained by Christian churches today, the largest being the Coptic Church. Additionally the Roman Catholic Council of Trent declared Protestantism heresy (a council’s rulings that Protestants obviously do not accept). ”

Do as we will, God can move the spirit like a giant lifting a straw; all resistance is useless. It is a strange belief indeed that thinks if God wants a toad to fly, he will wait for it to do so by its own efforts!
